how it works
Our rattlesnake avoidance training is done by using a multi-step process of exposing the dog to the scent of a rattlesnake via its shed, the sound of a rattlesnake, and then the dog is shown a live rattlesnake (restrained for safety of both animals). Using a real rattlesnake is important as most dogs can tell the difference between a rattlesnake and another type of snake or a prop snake based on appearance, behavior, sound, and smell.
Like most rattlesnake aversion trainings for dogs, we use an E-collar to teach the dog. We choose to use this method as it is the safest and most effective way to train dogs for rattlesnake avoidance. The reason for this is because the dog must associate the rattlesnake with a negative experience so that it chooses avoidance whenever it smells, sees, or hears a rattlesnake.
We come to you to do our avoidance training! This helps the training process in a few ways. First, it means low stress and excitement for the dog, making it easier for them to focus on the tasks at hand. Second, it simulates the dog running into a rattlesnake in a familiar environment. Lastly, it makes less work and easier scheduling for you.
Rattlesnake aversion training should stay with your dog indefinitely however it is recommended that you do a refresher training with your dog about once a year to be sure they continue to retain their training.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe for my dog?
Yes, our training is done by professionals with years of experience working with these animals. We use a verity of precautions to ensure the safety of all animals and people involved. We are also fully insured.
How is the rattlesnake restrained?
During the training process the rattlesnake is muzzled to prevent it from striking, this prevents it from being able to bite as well and removes the desire to bite as it knows that it is incapable of doing so.
How long does it take?
Rattlesnake avoidance training is a relatively short and simple process in terms of the training side. It only takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes of actual training time depending on the dog. For scheduling purposes you would want to block out about 45 minutes to an hour of time in you schedule for the training.
How will my dog behave around rattlesnakes after this training?
There are some myths out there about rattlesnake avoidance training especially pertaining to training done with an E-collar. One prominent myth is that it teaches a dog to be absolutely terrified of anything that resembles or sounds like a rattlesnake. Claims that your dog will freak out and run away at the sight of a rope or sound of a sprinkler and these are simply false. Dogs are fairly intelligent and can tell the difference between even a rattlesnake and a non-venomous gopher snake. Not only that, but once your dog is trained he will not simply freak out and run away at the sight of a rattlesnake, most dogs after being trained tend to see or hear the snake and either quickly dump back and retreat behind there owner or just 6ft or so away from the snake (a safe distance). Some dogs aren’t afraid at all and when they see the snake they simply walk the other way.
