Just because a group is not on this list doesn’t mean they are bad. We have visited and or been apart of many organizations throughout Arizona and done the foot work to check out every resource available.

It is always imperative that you do your own research! Most rescues or sanctuaries are Non-profits although some sanctuaries are not which is ok. These places tend to be zoos and do NOT collect donations and often don’t always take in rescues. However if a group claims to be a non-profit and asks for donations they MUST provide their IRS Tax ID. You can check a organizations Non-profit status with this ID or search them by name on the IRS website to see if they are legitimate. We highly recommend that you do not give your money time or animals to groups claiming to be nonprofit if they do not or cannot provide this ID.

If you suspect someone or a group of animal abuse, neglect or hording we recommend filing a report to local animal control or reporting it to a group the focusing on stopping animal abuse such as the one linked below! Even if a person or organization seems official they are not exempt from the law and are does not mean they do right by the animals in there possession and as a community we should be cautious to insure the welfare of animals.

In Arizona there are many laws protecting our wildlife from both being harmed in the wild or being taken advantage of in captivity. If you suspect a organization or individual of illegal activities you should report it to Arizona Game & Fish Department or to local authorities. Here are a few examples of illegal activities. Buying or selling native wildlife, displaying native wildlife without permits, abusing or neglecting native wildlife, possession of endangered or protected Wildlife (Gila monsters, some rattlesnakes, desert tortoises, alligators, exotic venomous snakes, snapping turtles, etc.)
